Operation Steps and Use Methods of Dropping Point / Softening Point
1. Introduction of the heating furnace body structure
Shanghai Zhuoguang automatic drop point softening point instrument, the structure diagram of heating furnace body is as shown in Fig. 13:
graph 13
(1) Heating furnace structure: the heating furnace includes the heating body, embedded heating sheet and platinum resistance sensor; the middle empty slot is the sample chamber, for putting into the sample combination: including fat cup clamping head, fat cup with the sample, the lower slit of the fat cup.
There is a light source under the heating body, the light through the slit of the slit hole, shining on the signal sensor. When the sample softens, drops and blocks the optical hole, the signal sensor sends the signal and the instrument records the temperature.
(2) Sample combination: the middle is the fat cup for placing the sample; the top is the clamp for holding the upper end of the fat cup and connecting the handle; the bottom is the slit sleeve for passing the light and catching the dripping sample when it reaches the dropping or softening point.
(3) Inspection of the composite slit sleeve: click the "Test" button on the main interface, set the preset temperature to no more than 40 degrees, and click the "Automatic Detection" button to enter the automatic test interface.
The sample combination of the empty fat cup is put vertically into the furnace sample chamber, so that the lower observation mouth of the slit sleeve is parallel in front, and the light transmission hole of the furnace body and the light transmission hole of the slit sleeve are parallel to ensure that the detection hole can penetrate light.
2. Methods of Sample Preparation
2.1 Preparation of dropping point samples using a 2.8mm drop hole diameter fat cup:
Dropping point determination samples are mostly paste like substances, and the samples are generally not pre treated. The following two methods can be used to fill the fat cup:
Method 1: When measuring the grease according to ASTMD566-64 (73), the accessory sample rod rotates along the upper and lower ports of the grease to remove the middle cone grease. Figure 14 below:
graph 14
Method 2: According to pharmacopoeia standards such as DIN51801-1 (72), the fat cup should be filled completely and leveled, and the top and bottom should be scraped flat with a scraper.
2.2 Preparation of softening point samples using a 6.35mm drop hole diameter fat cup:
Softening point determination is mostly for solid block shaped samples, which need to be crushed and then heated and melted in a container, and do not use naked flames. Simultaneously stir continuously during the heating process to remove moisture from the sample at a higher temperature until there is no longer any bubbling phenomenon in the sample.
Preheat the fat cup on the copper plate, then pour in the melted sample until it overflows. After the sample cools and solidifies, use an overheated scraper to flatten the surface. Do not create gaps or bubbles inside the fat cup.
When measured according to ASTM D3461-86 or (GB8728-88) standards, a heavy ball (3/8 steel ball) should be placed in the center of the fat cup filled with the sample. Or measure according to other relevant standards.
3. Operation Method
Step 1: Turn on the power switch and preheat the instrument for 10 minutes.
Step 2: Enter the main interface and select 'Test'. For example, if the softening point of the sample to be tested
is around 65 ℃, input the sample name: Sample 01, starting temperature of 55 ℃, heating rate of 1 ℃/min, and stopping temperature of 75 ℃.
Step 3: After the temperature stabilizes at 65 ℃ (there will be at least 4 beeps from the buzzer), place the test assembly that has been loaded with the sample. Make the gap at the lower part of the slit sleeve clamp onto the positioning bracket inside the furnace. (Note: The slit sleeve and furnace body transparent hole can ensure light transmission. Refer to page 15 (3) for inspection of the combined slit sleeve.)
Step 4: After laying out the sample and waiting for the temperature to stabilize at 60 ℃, (Note: After placing the sample, the furnace temperature may slightly decrease, so it is recommended that the buzzer prompt at least 4 times to raise the temperature.), press the "raise" button, when the tested sample reaches the dropping point or softening point, the corresponding temperature will be displayed on the screen after the "dropping/softening point".
Step 5: After displaying the dropping point softening point temperature, immediately remove the sample. Observe if there is any sample dripping. If there is no sample dripping that covers the slit sleeve through the light hole, it indicates that the test is invalid.
If there is a sample droplet blocking the slit sleeve through the light hole, and the test value is valid, you can press the [Save] button to save the data or press the [Print] button to print the data. If you want to change the tested sample, press the [Return] button to return to the testing interface and set the corresponding parameters.
